The germ of the idea of making a drawing that would house a menagerie of these creatures started in a visit to Sri Lanka back in 2018, when she had a rare sighting of a single leopard, close to extinction. The solitary image moved her. The drawing is peppered with many such species – a giant claim, hump head wrasse and a Tarsier from her native Philippines, a lady’s slipper and tick from Martha’s Vineyard among many others.
It also houses the artist’s personal stories of the year that has been, an on-going catalogue of her growing litany of tattoos and drawings of unreal creatures met in dreams, drawn in day. “Lonely Boy” a fictional character modelled after the artist’s French bulldog Marley also makes his first appearance in Peewee’s art. Hidden inside the tapestry, he is a somber and silent observer to this world’s follies.
“Ark” is a reminder that in today’s world, the good and beautiful is salvageable, that despite today’s turmoil – with a little love and attention not all is lost.
